Demographic Profiles
The Applied Population Laboratory offers demographic profiles to promote the understanding of population dynamics in local areas. Profiles are generally provided in a report format and include multiple charts, tables, and maps to describe current, past, and/or future characteristics of a particular population. They can be customized to answer almost any population-oriented question as well as to provide considerable contextual and background information. We draw on data from the U.S. Census Bureau, State Data Centers, state education agencies, building permits, county economic data, and other more localized data sources to examine almost any geographic area, including state, region, county, city, school district, neighborhood, or watershed levels. Demographic profiles are a great way to get a broad summary of demographic knowledge in an easy to read and use format for the geographic area and population group of interest to you.
Demographers, planners, geographers, and sociologists work together with the client to customize a profile that best meets the client’s interests and needs. This means that rather than generating a cookie-cutter report, we take an innovative and collaborative approach to learning about clients’ needs and interests, including: choosing the right mix of data sources; presenting data in charts, tables, maps, or other appropriate media; and analyzing, interpreting, and summarizing results in an accessible manner. We work with you to get it right. Our main objective is to provide accurate and appropriate information that empowers the client to make informed decisions.
If you are interested in learning more about our demographic profiling services, we invite you to explore the examples found at the links below. Past projects have included profiling the African American and Hmong populations of the State of Wisconsin, examining the population in northern Wisconsin focused on the population without a college degree, reporting on population and housing stock in the Villages of Ashwaubenon and Shorewood, and analyzing the population by sub-region of the state with respect to outdoor recreation planning.
Fees for services and timeline for completion vary considerably depending on the scale of the project. In general, fees range from $5,000 to $20,000 and timelines range from 6 to 16 weeks.
