Overview
The Applied Population Laboratory’s information systems are computer based programs that facilitate access to and manipulation of demographic and geographical data. Through designing and managing information systems, APL is able to create customized access to data so that clients get just the right data in just the right format to meet their needs. Systems are often run through a website that clients can access, but they can also be customized applications that run on a desktop machine, depending on the goals of the project and client needs. Our flagship web system, GetFacts (http://www.getfacts.wisc.edu/), is a “first of its kind” online interactive mapping and data extraction tool for Wisconsin demographics. It is available for public use. For groups that want more customized tools, the APL offers information systems tailored to the specific needs of the project and users, and the systems are not always publicly available. These systems can include tools such as: data viewing (profiles or tables), mapping, data collection (where clients or community members can insert data), site selection information, and/or custom GIS applications, along with various other functions. In each case, we design our systems to assist communities, organizations, local agencies, businesses, and/or citizens in making informed decisions based on relevant information.
Our Approach
Our goal at the Applied Population Lab is to create applications that not only meet our customers’ information needs but are also easy to use. Many sites have great tools and data but are very difficult to access and navigate. We work with clients to understand the end users’ background and experience and create a system that will ultimately work for them both in terms of the kinds of data that are available and in terms of how it is presented.
Services
The Applied Population Laboratory can provide a full range of information system services such as web mapping, community-based information systems, dynamic data retrieval and report generation sites, custom desktop applications, and web site hosting. Recent past projects include: a compendium of indicators for Washington County ; a mapping and data retrieval system for the Wisconsin Food Security Project, and neighborhood indicators system for the City of Madison. Links to these projects are below in the examples section. Fees for services and timeline for completion vary considerably depending on the scope of the project. If you are interested in learning more about our information systems please contact James Beaudoin.
